P·Series Comparison: Which Irons Are the Best for You?

With the introduction of the all-new P·790 irons joining P·770, P·7CB and P·7TW, golfers now have a host of P·Series irons to choose from. Whether you’re looking for added distance, ultimate forgiveness, precise shot making or a blend of consistency and feel, there’s an iron in the P·Series family (or maybe a combination) for you.
Let’s compare each model to help you identify which P·Series irons are best for your game and how you can utilize TaylorMade’s custom fitting resources to build the perfect combo set.
P·790 vs. P·770 IRONS
Both P·790 and P·770 irons are built to give golfers two different blends of distance and forgiveness in a clean, modern players inspired package that is synonymous with the P·Series family.
The all-new P·790 irons employ a new forged face material – 4340M. This material is 20 percent stronger than what we used in the previous P·790 irons. As a result, our engineers were able to make the face stronger and faster. This translates to faster ball speeds and longer carry distances throughout the set*.

The use of 4340M in the face of P·790 irons also allowed our design team to increase the sweet spot by up to 24%#. This enhances forgiveness while also helping retain ball speeds on mishits.

In P·790, thick-thin back wall construction unlocks additional weight redistribution, further optimizing mass properties for pinpointed CG placement creating the distance and forgiveness P·790 is known for.
Both P·790 and P·770 irons feature FLTD CG™ with the CG lowest in the long irons and progressively shifting higher throughout the set. The lower CG in the long irons helps promote high launch, while the higher CG in the short irons enhances trajectory, spin and distance control.
While P·770 retains the forgiveness and playability characteristics of P·790, it is made to offer better ball strikers the pure feel, control and consistency they seek in a players iron shape.
When it comes to shaping, you’ll notice a more compact, sleeker profile in the new P·790 irons than previous generations. The top line is thinner, and each sole has been uniquely designed. The long irons feature an increased sole radius and progressive beveled leading edge throughout the set. The result is consistent turf interaction and improved impact locations.
